Wait... On Second Thought...

OK... I've got a healthy back-and-forth with myself about a topic. Now I'm thinking about doing book arts (a.k.a. artists' books, a.k.a. original works of art in book form), with a section on private presses. I have some images of some art I've worked on with others that I can put up. And I know plenty of local book artists whose sites I can link to. Additionally my thesis dealt with the link between the form of the book and the affect on the content -- a semiotic link between medium and message type of thing. A real philosophical snooze-fest? Maybe, but it is an original contribution.

So much to think about...

  1. I've been having similar conundrums about topics. There are so many options! I think that the book arts sounds really interesting - I've seen some artists books, but don't know too much about them, and the idea of hearing about them from an LIS perspective is intriguing!

  2. I don't think that sounds like a philosophical snooze-fest. Of course, considering that all of us are current or future librarians, I would surmise that all of us love the book as an object, not just the content. Any chance we could get a preview of your artwork?

  3. A site examining the link between the medium and the message would most likely be of particular interest to anyone who would want to get their work published. I know that if I was an aspiring author, this would be one site I would want to check out!

  4. It sounds like a good amendment to your original project. I look forward to seeing it. I'm sure it's not a snooze-fest. Original work ups the interest factor.

I'm not on your archive mailing list, but would like to be listed on it.

  5. I've never really thought about a semiotic relationship between publishing and content, it would certainly be an original topic, who is the audience?

  6. I'm not a philosophy person, but does a "semiotic rel. b/w publishing and content" mean anything like "a change in context is a change in meaning"? If that's anything close it makes me think of the rave-culture inspired designs of common ads with the typography cleverly altered to make one do a double-take.

  7. I think doing your website on artists' books and small/private presses sounds so interesting, and there are a lot of different aspects to these topics that you could choose to focus on or not. The relationship between form and content is important, and I also have been personally interested in private presses because not only have they published small quantities of beautiful material in that the books themselves are works of art, but they also have tended to publish material that traditional publishing companies or more commercial venues refused because the material was too controversial or deviant at the time.

That's so awesome you and your fiancee are into letterpress too! I have used Vandercook SP15's, but I'm not sure about the one you mentioned, P-20. Although I have printed at U. of the Arts before, so maybe! You're so lucky you have access there! I really love printing best on Chandler and Price platen presses, and that's what I would like to buy someday.

  8. I like the enthusiasm that you have now that you have found the right focus for your website. It sounds like something that you have spent a lot of time on, that is interesting, and you can have fun developing. I am looking forward to that feeling!
